Choosing Family Over Finances Part VI- Jobs and Poo-Water

It’s been a while since I’ve published an article. These last few months have zapped my creativity. Things, however, have continued to happen so I will trudge through the murky waters of my mind and attempt to scratch out a life update. Here’s what’s going on with our family… Continue reading “Choosing Family Over Finances Part VI- Jobs and Poo-Water”

Choosing Family Over Finances Part III

This is Part III of my Choosing Family Over Finances series. If you missed Part I or Part II you can read those, but it’s not like you’ll be lost if you just ignore them altogether. Actually, those posts do set the groundwork a little bit. You should go back and read them first. Continue reading “Choosing Family Over Finances Part III”

FinCon Blues

FinCon 2019 is officially underway. It’s a great chance for like-minded individuals to gather together to meet, chat, and make lifelong best friends with each other. It’s like science camp for nerds. I mean adult nerds. I mean, the people who probably went to science camps as kids are currently in Washington, DC enjoying Fincon. They’re meeting their favorite bloggers, podcasters, YouTubers and best blogging buddies. They’re drinking fancy beer, wearing MadFientist and ChooseFI T-shirts, and fighting over who can acquire the most Mr. Burrito Bowl business cards from Financial Pilgrimage. It’s a whole thing.

I’ve never felt like I was missing anything by not being at FinCon, but now that I actually know a lot of the people in the community I’m experiencing FOMO in a way I never did with science camp. These are my people. Sure, some of them wear Asics running shoes with jeans, or make unintentional tourniquets because of how tightly they wear their wrist watches…but they’re my people. They’re my kind of people and I am saddened to miss hanging out with them.

Here’s what it feels like.

Rule of 72- Doubling Your Money with Math

I’ve talked about the Rule of 72 before, but I’ve never devoted an entire article to it. If you’re unfamiliar, or even if you’re not, I guess, the Rule of 72 is a calculation to quickly see how many years it will take for your money to double at a given annual rate of return.

Wait, this is fun. Don’t go away. Continue reading “Rule of 72- Doubling Your Money with Math”

How to Access all that Sweet Pretax Money Once You Retire

Theoretically, this is a blog about pursuing financial independence. I get distracted easily. At the heart of the blog I want to teach people about the power of getting your finances in order. I’ve talked about our philosophy on investing, how it’s super important to save your money, and even how the best vehicle for quickly building wealth is through your pretax accounts. We haven’t talked about how to access your pretax money, until today. Continue reading “How to Access all that Sweet Pretax Money Once You Retire”

9 Deadly Myths About Exercise

I have a lot of thoughts on exercise.  Fortunately for me, I also have a blog.  People have a lot of weird ideas in regards to exercise and I’d like clear a few of the more popular myths up. Continue reading “9 Deadly Myths About Exercise”

Life is Short- Spend for Today vs. Save for Tomorrow

Life is Short- Spend for Today vs. Save for Tomorrow

Can you believe how much of your life has already passed?  F-word, man. Summer has for sure faded and we’re smack dab in the middle of fall.  This time of year always gets me thinking, usually about random stuff like the eternal expanse of space or wondering what the ancient Egyptians were really like but sometimes I think about money questions.  Questions like should we be in camp spend for today or camp save for tomorrow?  Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and life passes us by at breakneck speeds, even if we are lucky enough to make it to this mythical tomorrow. Continue reading “Life is Short- Spend for Today vs. Save for Tomorrow”

How to Turn Your Weaknesses into Strengths and Become the Person You Want to Be

What kind of person are you?

The question itself is kind of ridiculous because it assumes the type of person you are is fixed.  We always describe ourselves in fixed ways.  I’m not very good at math or I have terrible handwriting or I’m unorganized.  These characteristics feel like they’re written in stone.  They feel fixed like there is no way to change them.

Really our characteristics are more carved in a glacier than they are carved in stone.  The ice is constantly changing but the change feels so slow that we often don’t recognize it.  If we change the way we view the question then we can change the type of person we view ourselves to be.   Continue reading “How to Turn Your Weaknesses into Strengths and Become the Person You Want to Be”

Ten Years From Now You May as Well Be Ten Years Ahead

Welcome to 2028!  What Have You Been Up to These Last Ten Years?

The next ten years are going to pass at warp speed.  Remember ten years ago?  It was 2008.  Obama was preaching hope and change, Donald Trump was doing questionable things on a much smaller stage, all of America’s houses were drastically changing in pretend value.  The New York Giants were good at football. Life happens fast.

Ten years is a long time, long enough that you can accomplish just about anything.  If you decided to put in the work you could become a black belt in Jiu-jitsu in the next ten years.  A business you start this year would be celebrating it’s tenth anniversary.  You could be massively in debt from purchases you no longer enjoy.  You could be retired. Single Car Blues- The Pros and Cons of Owning Only One Car

"Yes, my wife and I share a car, I guess it is pretty eco-friendly now that you mention it," Mr Burrito Bowl.

"Um, I just asked if I could take your order," Taco Bell guy.

My wife and I have shared one car since February of 2017.  It’s been pretty easy, I like it.  Before you go out and sell your second (or third) car it hasn’t been all high fives and make-out sessions.  Our alarm rings every weekday at 5:30 in the morning.  This gives us time to wake up and have coffee and for my wife to have breakfast.  She has to be at work at 7am.  Being as how we only have one car it’s my job to drive her to work.
