Purchasing Financial Independence $11.57 at a Time

Hey, Kid. I’m looking to sell some perpetual freedom.  You interested?

I like you. You know why?  You’re not basic.  One thing about you is, you like to visualize your path to FI differently than most.  Those satisfied with the 4% rule are basic.  You aren’t basic, Starbucks and Uggs notwithstanding, you’re an individual.  You’re the type of individual that’s interested in perpetual freedom.

It’s hard to quantify how far you’ve come and how far you have left to go using the standard 4% rule.  Your head knows how many more dollars you need to reach the mythical summit of Mount Freedom but your heart longs to know what your hard work has bought, so far. In a World Full of Plants…Be a Weed

In a World Full of Plants…Be a Weed.

We can learn a lot about resiliency from weeds.  In life, things are going to go wrong.  The people around you will forget to water you.  Some people will even try to stomp you out.  We live in a world that’s ready to be offended at the drop of a hat, a world where people get their feelings hurt if someone disagrees with their opinion.

When plant like people hear this type of negativity they let it envelop them.  They wilt away and quit trying.  When weed people hear that same negative talk they just keep on keeping on.  Weeds don’t give a f*ck what negative people think about their goals and dreams. Ten Years From Now You May as Well Be Ten Years Ahead

Welcome to 2028!  What Have You Been Up to These Last Ten Years?

The next ten years are going to pass at warp speed.  Remember ten years ago?  It was 2008.  Obama was preaching hope and change, Donald Trump was doing questionable things on a much smaller stage, all of America’s houses were drastically changing in pretend value.  The New York Giants were good at football. Life happens fast.

Ten years is a long time, long enough that you can accomplish just about anything.  If you decided to put in the work you could become a black belt in Jiu-jitsu in the next ten years.  A business you start this year would be celebrating it’s tenth anniversary.  You could be massively in debt from purchases you no longer enjoy.  You could be retired. The Work Hard Play Hard Mindset vs. Chasing FI

Work Hard Play Hard

I have a great friend who is really good at making money.  He’s not an overnight success or the inventor of some app that set him up for life. Instead, working hard and being willing to take risks is a calling card for him. He works long hours and is always looking for the next step to lead him to success.  Over the last few years I’ve watched him and his wife move companies and countries in order to climb the career ladder.  Each step has gotten them closer to where they want to be financially.

I see pictures of him and his wife eating out at nice restaurants, drinking fancy coffee, or having a cocktail in some seriously kick-ass locations around the world.  He’s living the life. Work hard.  Play hard. Continue reading “The Work Hard Play Hard Mindset vs. Chasing FI”

Six Heroic Ways I Lowered My Student Loan Burden

Fresh out of high school I had no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up. I just knew I didn’t want to be stuck digging a ditch or flipping burgers the rest of my life.  The general sentiment at the time was if you want to make real money, and not end up working in a fast food joint, you need to get a college degree. So in May of 2005 I graduated high school with an honorable 2.5 GPA, a head full of confidence, and skipped off to college. Continue reading “Six Heroic Ways I Lowered My Student Loan Burden”

8 Ways We’re Purchasing a Vehicle with Financial Independence in Mind

The Burrito Bowls Are in The Market for a Vehicle

In case the vague title threw you off, this post is about purchasing a car with the goal of financial independence in mind.  What does that mean?  In a nutshell, our goal is to purchase the best bang for our buck without derailing our financial goals. Period.  We care about getting a reliable vehicle that will serve us for years to come.  Some have said we don’t care about looking cool or impressing the masses.  It is true we aren’t trying to get laid with our vehicle selection.  We’re a married couple, damnit,  we can get not laid on our own! Continue reading “8 Ways We’re Purchasing a Vehicle with Financial Independence in Mind”

“Hell Yeah, Give me the Off Road Tires,”- Mr. Burrito Bowl Almost Buys a Truck

Earlier this year I almost bought a truck. Well, by almost I mean I went down the rabbit hole of looking at trucks on Craigslist and daydreaming about the inherent testosterone increase that lies therein.

It’s a dangerous hole to start looking in because there’s just so many fun options.  First, I decided it was a need not a want.  Very important to only buy needs when chasing financial independence.  I NEEDED a truck because I’ve been driving a Honda Fit to the various construction sites for the last couple of years and at a certain point it’s just un-American.
